Big Band Classics, The New Oscar D’ León Material

With his unique, matchless seal, Oscar D’ León presents his latest album. This time, he surprises his audience with Big Band Classics, consisting of 10 songs performed by 36 musicians gathered in the recording studio to pay tribute to this genre. Characterized by its quality and sounds that take us back to the twentieth century, an era characterized by greats artists such as: Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, amongst others.

Here’s How The Project Started

In order to perform and produce a tribute to this musical genre, producer Rodolfo Castillo traveled to Nashville, Tennessee “The Musical City” to meet with a group of colleagues, professionals, arrangers, sound engineers and talented musicians. All that was missing was that beautiful voice, with the ability to interpret the following repertoire of the classics in English and Spanish: My Way, New York New York, Fly Me To The Moon, Sway, among others.

Gradually, the face of Oscar D’ León started to reveal itself, given that he is a legend in the world of entertainment, because of his charisma and swing to interpret and recreate the repertoire of the best of Big Band, which marked this intense musical era.

A Living Legend

Jaime Araque, executive producer of the album commented: “He is a living legend of our music, an icon of our Latin American heritage, an international artist that for over 40 years continues to be prominent in the world. A voice without borders and the largest of its kind, due to his artistic quality and experience, we have chosen him to interpret and represent this great project”.

This album is a collection that came to remain in the soul and heart of lovers of good music, it will mark once more the musical career of Oscar D’ León, who continues to show us his talent and performance quality.

EL SONERO DEL MUNDO

A true legend!

Reaping a crop of great success and awards worldwide, Venezuelan singer Oscar D’ León is one of the most prominent authors and performers of salsa and Caribbean music. His musical career spans a trajectory of more than thirty years, recording over fifty albums inspired mainly by Benny Moré and Cuban sounds.

As a result of his long and successful musical career, Oscar D’ León received the Award of Excellence from the Recording Latin Academy, which he dedicated to his country: “I dedicate this to Venezuela because I am the son of that beautiful land”.


His Roots

His name is Oscar Emilio León Somoza. He was born on July 11, 1943 in Caracas, Venezuela, blessing the home of Carmen Dionisia Somoza and Justo León, who were able to sense in what he would become, given his interest in Caribbean music since he was a child.


His Musical Career

Due to his outgoing and enthusiastic personality, Oscar has received a number of nicknames his fans immediately recognize, such as: “El Diablo de la Salsa” , “El Bajo Danzante”, “El Coloso de la Salsa”, “El León” , “El Sonero Mayor”,  “El Sonero del Mundo” and the “Faraón de la Salsa”, amongst others.

Throughout his musical career, Oscar D’ León has recorded over 60 albums; one of which is “El Sonero del mundo” produced by Willy Chirino and nominated for a Grammy Award in 1997. He has won many gold records and starting in 1998, every March 15th, the City of New York celebrates in his honor the Oscar D’ León day.


His Story

La Dimensión Latina was the name of the first band established by Oscar D’ León in 1973, where he began singing and playing bass. With this band, he released his big hit: “Pensando En Ti”, the first in a long list of hits with this orchestra.


La Salsa Mayor

Four years later, Oscar left his formation and arose loaded with his own orchestra La Salsa Mayor. It was a great success in his country and began to reap commercial hits like “Mi bajo y yo”, “El baile del suavecito”, and “Bravo de verdad”. Slowly, his name started to ring internationally.


A Little “Latin Jazz”

In the next stage of his career, he proved himself as a musician. This time, he incorporated shades of jazz into his chords that seemed renewed, making him a permanent guest of the most important jazz festivals in the world. He also had the opportunity to record with idols from his youth, such as: Celia Cruz, Eddie Palmieri and Tito Puente.


Latin American Ambassador

Adults have not been the only ones to enjoy Oscar D’ León’s art. In 2000, he performed in the soundtrack of Walt Disney´s “Emperor´s New Groove”. Since 2007, he is the Latin American Ambassador of Operation Smile Foundation, which provides support and care to children with cleft lip and palate in more than 51 countries worldwide. In 2010, along with the Swiss-Cuban Ochumare Quartet, he offered several concerts titled “Pathways to a Smile”, dedicated to supporting this initiative and continuing with his humanitarian work.

Currently, Oscar D’ León is the most well-known, modern salsero from Venezuela and his legacy continues to reap successes and new horizons.
